Enjoy wandering around the city centre and the open spaces and architecture at the Senate Square, including Helsinki Cathedral.
Two more church buildings are worth a brief visit - Temppeliaukio Church (quarried out of natural bedrock) and Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral (the largest orthodox church in Western Europe).
Don’t miss Kauppatori (Market Square) and Market Hall for fresh food or souvenirs.
For some history and culture, head to the National Museum of Finland, the Ateneum Art Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma.
For some wildlife or to entertain the kids, head to Sea Life Helsinki or Korkeasaari Zoo.
If you’ve got three or more days in Helsinki, a good half-day trip involving a short and pleasant ferry-ride is a trip to Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress (one of the biggest sea fortresses in the world).
And don’t forget to try a sauna!
